Rosacea: Concerns

What Is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a prevalent chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes redness and flushing, primarily on the face, but can also affect other parts of the body.  Rosacea can present differently depending on the type, but can also include persistent blushing, pimples, swelling, thickening of the skin, skin irritation, visible blood vessels, and can also affect the eyes. While there is no current cure for Rosacea, symptoms can be managed and lessened with treatments that we offer at SkinHD.

Symptoms of Rosacea

Symptoms of rosacea are diverse and can affect people differently depending on the type of rosacea and skin type. In the early stages of rosacea, symptoms can flare up quickly when exposed to certain triggers and can resolve once the trigger is eliminated. The first signs of rosacea include skin sensitivity, persistent redness or flushing across the nose, cheeks and forehead, and can progress to bumps, pimples, visible blood vessels/thread veins and can also extend to the eyes, causing irritation and swelling. If left untreated, rosacea symptoms can worsen and may lead to a thickening of the skin, particularly on the nose.

Due to the fluctuating symptoms of rosacea, it can sometimes be misdiagnosed as eczema, acne and keratosis pilaris.

Causes

The precise causes of rosacea are currently unknown, but it’s much more likely that you will experience symptoms if a family member also suffers with the condition. Other factors that could play a role in the development of rosacea include abnormalities in the blood vessels or immune system, environmental stressors, microscopic skin mites (demodex) and/or exposure to certain bacterias (such as H.pylori). Rosacea is a prevalent non-contagious skin condition, affecting around 1 in 10 people in the UK, and tends to be more common in women than men, and affects those with lighter skin tones more than darker skin tones.
Certain triggers can cause a worsening of symptoms and differ from person to person, so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on when symptoms seem to present to help avoid triggering a flare-up. Possible triggers can include:

  • Sun exposure
  • Stress
  • Hot or cold temperatures
  • Alcohol, spicy food or hot drinks consumption
  • Exercise
  • Certain ingredients in skincare or haircare products
  • Hormonal changes (pregnancy/menopause etc)
  • Some medications
Treatments

While there is no cure for rosacea, treatments can help to reduce or relieve symptoms and help to reduce the frequency of flare-ups.
Treatments differ from person to person depending on the severity and type of rosacea, so a consultation with your SkinHD practitioner can help determine the best course of treatment for you.

Skincare – using skincare products that are too harsh or over-strip the skin can cause a worsening of symptoms in rosacea sufferers. A consultation with our skin specialist can help choosing products that are gentle enough on the skin, but also contain active ingredients such as azelaic acid and niacinamide to help reduce redness and flushing to control flare-ups. WOW Fusion – WOW fusion is a treatment that combines mesotherapy, microneedling and botulinum toxin to help reduce flushing symptoms in rosacea sufferers. The star ingredient is the inclusion of micro-botox, which when injected trans-dermally (as opposed to into the muscle with traditional anti-wrinkle injections), botox restricts the glands and blood vessels that are responsible for skin flushing – reducing redness and inflammation. A personalised skin ‘cocktail’ also includes essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that promote better skin health for a much more even skin tone and texture. A course of treatments is recommended for optimal results.

Chemical Peels – a series of light chemical peels can help exfoliate the upper layers of the skin, speeding up cell turnover and preventing pores becoming clogged and congested, which can aggravate the symptoms of rosacea. Chemical peel treatments can also be combined with LED Light Therapy to help to reduce inflammation and even out skin tone.
